Launching Your First Podcast – My Story

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been working overtime on a bunch of different projects, and I’m so excited to share this with you (drumroll please):

I’M STARTING A PODCAST!!!!!

This isn’t something I ever dreamed about doing in 2018, and it certainly wasn’t on my vision board. However, life works in mysterious ways so here I am. Let’s get down to the details.!

I’ve been listening to radio since I was a kid tuning into Adventures in Odyssey. I only recently got into listening to podcasts (within the last year and a half) and I’ve also been a guest on two podcasts in the past. It’s a brilliant platform to share information and spread love throughout the world. Althought I flirted with the idea of doing my own, but I had no clue what it would be about.

A few months ago Spotify ran a contest for women of color called the SoundUp Bootcamp, where 10 lucky ladies would win a chance to participate in their workshop and compete for a $10,000 grant to launch their own show. Excited to apply, I started formulating an idea for a podcast based on a passion project I’ve been mulling over for some time.

My Post (4)

As a budding creative, you’re constantly wondering how successful artists got their start. How did they manage to land their first break, stay motivated or take big risks? I want answers to those questions, and I know I’m not the only one who does. The idea for Meraki Mentors was born.

18,000 women applied for the workshop (!!!!!!!!), and although I wasn’t one of the finalists, I couldn’t put this idea down. So I started reading everything I could, joined the wonderful online community that originated from the application process, WOC Podcasters, and got to work.

This is the result of that labor of love. My new podcast is called Meraki Mentors, and it’s a podcast about women who create. We’ll have conversations with women of various disciplines talking about what it means to live an artistic life. Meraki is a Greek word meaning to do something with soul, creativity, or love.

Stay tuned for more updates and tips, tricks and resources for starting your own podcast. I’m taking detailed notes during this process and will be sharing them on the NEW podcast section of the blog!

kickstarterI recently started a Kickstarter campaign to help cover the costs of equipment and I’m beyond thrilled and honored to say that within the first 3 days, we are nearly halfway to our goal! Our campaign is even on Kickstarter’s list of Projects We Love. We also have our first two guests onboard, which I’m super excited about!

The Kickstarter ends at 6pm on Friday July 6th and interviews will commence next month in anticipation of our late September release date. In the meantime, check out this video about the podcast and fundraising campaign:

I’m currently still planning a lot of things, but I’ve learned so much about what it takes to create a great podcast. If you would like to follow us, get in touch, or support the launch visit one of the links below and don’t forget to share this post!
